How the New Mexico Elk & Big Game Draw Works

New Mexico uses a random computerized draw system designed to ensure fairness and consistency across all applicants.

License allocation by hunt code:

  • 84% โ€“ New Mexico residents

  • 16% โ€“ Non-residents

    • Up to 10% for non-residents applying with a New Mexico registered outfitter

    • Up to 6% for non-residents applying without an outfitter

Applying through a licensed outfitter is one of the most effective ways to increase non-resident elk draw odds in New Mexico. Many hunters also choose to pair draw applications with landowner permits as a backup strategy.
